This event will be held under Swim England (ASA) Laws and Technical Rules of Open Water Swimming, including IPC Rules for Multi-Disability Event.

COMPETITION CONDITIONS          PNSC Southsea Pier to Pier 2017

Under Swim England (ASA) Laws and Technical Rules of Open Water Swimming

1.     The Competition

  • Open to bona fide members of clubs affiliated to Swim England (ASA) and Temporary Members only
  • Competitors must be 12 years of age on 31 December 2017
  • A swimmer entering the Junior event must be 16 years or younger on 31 December 2017
  • A swimmer shall have joined the club in whose name he is entered at least 60 days prior to the event
  • This is a freestyle race
  • The promoter reserves the right to make separate starts for Men and Ladies. The Men’s race will start first
  • Multiple start times may be used in the interest of safety
  • All starts will be in accordance with the SE (ASA) Laws of Open Water Swimming
  • There will be no separate category for wetsuits should they be optional (water temperatures 18ºC-19.9ºC)
  • Protests shall be made and dealt with as detailed in SE (ASA) Law

 2.     Entries

  • Entries will only be accepted when received by the organiser on or before the closing date
  • Entries should be completed using the official entry and declaration forms
  • The organiser reserves the right to limit the number of entries to 120 swimmers and to close the competition once the maximum numbers have been reached

 3.     Awards

  • Trophies will be awarded to Men’s Race Overall Winner, Ladies Race Overall Winner, 1st Hampshire Man, 1st Hampshire Lady, 1st Portsmouth Man, 1st Portsmouth Lady
  • Medals will be awarded to top 3 in each AGE category stated on the Entry Form
  • Certificates will be issued on the day to all competitors who complete the race
  • All presentations will be made at Southsea Volunteer Lifeguard headquarters, Esplanade, Southsea as soon after the race finish as possible

 4.     Briefing

  • The compulsory race briefing will be held on the beach next to the Hovercraft Terminal
  • Any swimmers not attending the briefing will not be allowed to participate
  • Competitors wearing swimsuits must have their number written on their back, upper arms and hands. Competitors wearing wetsuits should they be permitted must have their number written on their hands. Volunteers will be on site to mark up competitors prior to the briefing
  • Numbered hats will be issued and must be worn outside any other hat used so the number is visible
  • Wristbands will be issued and must be worn throughout the race and returned to the Safety Officer promptly on leaving the water, either at the finish or upon retirement. No competitor should leave the race area without returning their wristband to ensure they are safely clear of the water and accounted for
  • The Race Referee will announce specific information on the use of wetsuits at the event

 5.     Time limit

  • A cut-off time of 1 hour 15 minutes will be applied and any swimmer not completing the course in this time may be asked to withdraw from the race and return to the shore

 6.     Swimming devices

  • No swimmer shall be permitted to use or wear any device which may become an aid to their speed, endurance or buoyancy. The exception is wetsuits should they be permitted or mandatory on the day (according to water temperature)
  • Goggles, swim cap (2 hats may be worn and if so the outer one should be the numbered event hat), nose clip and earplugs may be used

  • Swimmers will be allowed to use grease providing this is not, in the opinion of the Race Referee, excessive

 7.     Safety craft

  • Only official safety craft (safety boats, jet skis, kayaks, canoes) will be allowed on the course. Competitors are NOT permitted to supply their own craft

 8.     Right to Cancel

  • The organisers reserve the right to cancel the event should weather conditions be considered dangerous or unsuitable and the competitors must accept this as a condition of entry
  • If the event is cancelled, after event expenses have been paid by the organiser, a percentage of the entry fee MAY be refunded to competitors
